On our Through-Hole Technology (THT) line, we use a GenRad GR228x in-circuit PCB tester. Once components are installed, the boards are passed through the in-circuit tester. This check for any shorts or opens that may have been created during the assembly process. Shorts are undesired connections and opens are two points that should be connected but aren’t.
As part of our Surface Mount Technology (SMT) line, we have two Mirtec MV-3L and two Testronic 504 automated optical inspection (AOI) machines. AOI is an automated visual inspection of the PCB, searching the device for both catastrophic failures (such as a missing component) and quality defects (such as a component being askew). This process is commonly used since it is a non-contact test method and can be implemented at many stages of production, including bare board inspection, solder paste inspection, and post-reflow.
AOI systems are generally used after solder reflow because they can inspect for most defects (component placement, missing solder, solder shorts, etc.) at a set stage of production. Faulty boards can then be reworked while the other boards continue to the next stage of production.
PCBs that pass through the AOI system are inspected for:
Area defects
Component polarity, offset, skew, presence or absence
Excessive or insufficient solder joints
Flipped components
Solder bridges
Height defects
Lifted leads
Volume defects

Functional test (FCT) is the final step PCBs must go through before they are shipped. FCT assures the PCB is free of defects that would adversely affect its function and tests the PCB’s functionality and behavior. The test simulates the electrical environment in which the PCB will be used and renders a pass/fail result. FCT is the best way to detect wrong component values, parametric failures, and functional failures. The exact requirements, development and procedures of a functional test vary widely from PCB to PCB and system to system.
